FAQ's

What are these quality settings on the camera?

Many digital cameras have the option to adjust the quality of your pictures by resolution and quality. The quality setting adjusts the JPEG compression of the camera inversely. That is, a high quality setting uses less compression than a lower. Increased compression result in a certain amount of blurry imagery and squares showing up in the picture. Most of the time time, a midrange quality should be all that's necessary for most users.

What effect will higher resolution cameras have on print quality?

You might, though typically, a person won't notice. Instead higher resolutions provide more room for image cropping.

What is optical zoom? Digital zoom?

Optical zoom is similar to the sort of zoom found on non-digital cameras. It relies on moving parts of the lens to achieve the desired result.

Digital zoom, however, makes an extrapolation of what the image should look like when zoomed in. You will lose picture quality this way with pixelation of the image.

Can I use my printer to print high resolution photos from my digital camera?
Newer printers shouldn't have a problem, but a photo printer is best as they're designed specifically for that purpose. Use glossy paper and you should consider using a paper cutter over scissors to cut out any pictures.

What if I don't have a printer that can print my photos?

Some traditional photograph developers now offer printing services for digital photographs at the same cost as conventional film. You can also find some services online that can print the pictures for you.

How many pictures can fit on my camera before I need to print them or transfer them to a computer?

It depends on the exact camera you have. Higher compression and greater memory will let you store more pictures.
